Get to know us through Anna's experience

Every year, we are pleased to assist one or more interns with their studies. They spend half a year with our team, getting the opportunity to see how we operate and learn through doing, whether they are working on their graduation project or other tasks. We invest a lot of effort in finding the right match, as they truly become a part of our team during their time with us.

Anna did outstanding work as an intern. She was always eager to learn, made mistakes, and learned from them. She sought feedback and consistently improved herself. Anna was curious and always up for a joke.

Just as we look for certain qualities in an intern, interns also seek a place that fits them. A good working environment makes it easier to ask questions and learn from others.

We sat down with Anna, just before the end of her internship, to evaluate ourselves as well. Let's hear from her how her experience was.

What did you expect from your internship at Okapion?

Since the company consists of a small team of experienced UX designers, I expected a lot of personal guidance and growth as a designer. I also expected more responsibility than an intern might get at a larger company.

How did you find your place as an intern at Okapion?

It felt genuinely personal and understanding. As an intern, I felt respected and heard. They took my opinions and thoughts almost as seriously as those of the other colleagues. This helped me gain more confidence. What stood out the most was the fact that they prioritized my growth as a designer and made plenty of room for schoolwork.

What is the craziest or funniest thing you experienced?

I got the chance to take many trips with the team. One of the trips was their annual ski trip to Gerlos! I got to know everyone on a personal level. We laughed, partied, and of course, did a bit of skiing :)

How did you find the projects you worked on?

They were, to say the least, challenging. Okapion works with large data-related companies. Therefore, most of the projects I worked on focused on creating a more user-friendly platform for those companies. It was a bit of flow building and a lot of detailed interaction design. They take those details very seriously and give you the time to perfect them. When I started at Okapion, they gave me a smaller and simpler project to get acquainted with their way of working in Figma. Here, they already gave me the time to make detailed designs, which I found refreshing.

What did your workweek at Okapion look like?

Everyone, including myself, worked 3 days in the office and 2 days online from home! Monday, Wednesday, and Friday were office days, and Tuesday and Thursday were online. I worked from 9:00 to 17:30 like everyone else. Every Thursday was my schoolwork day. Here, I got the time to work on my school assignments. On office days, we had lunch together, so we could talk about how everyone's day was going. I worked on one project at the beginning of the week and another at the end. Sometimes I got a small project for a day to help them out! Lots of variety.

How would you describe Okapion?

A design agency that loves UX design and gives everyone the chance to learn from each other every day. They see beauty in the simplest designs, which is why they strive to create products that feel and look simple so that everyone wants to use them!

Not unimportant, how is the atmosphere?

A fun and informal workplace where everyone checks in on each other. Everyone is treated equally, whether you are the boss or an intern. They are not afraid to make jokes, which made me less stressed about the work I had to do. They are also very understanding, and I was never afraid to ask questions. In fact, they encourage curiosity!

Who is Okapion the right company for an internship?

For someone who is not afraid to take initiative, wants to learn more about UX design, has an eye for detail, and enjoys being social!

What is your golden tip/advice for students looking for an internship?

Show why you specifically want to work at Okapion. Which of their projects inspires you to work with them? They are also very interested in who you are as a designer. Show them what design you love, whether it's yours or someone else's, and tell them why you find it so beautiful. They want to see what drives you, your strengths, and what you want to learn from them.

It sounds like Anna was in the right place with us, but we surely felt the same way.
